Tay Square, Dundee
UFO 'lightlines' were used to draw visitors towards the theatre in Tay Square, Dundee. An aluminium U-channel was installed in the pavement, into which the sideglow fibre optic cable was laid before being sealed with a clear resin formula to protect the fibre from damage.
The 150w metal halide lightsources are located in the public benches along the walkway, allowing the lightlines to constantly change through 4 different colours.
The benefits of using sideglow fibre optics for a project of this type are many. It is very flexible, robust and easy to install, colourchanges are easily achieved and it is virtually maintenance free, with only the bulb in the lightsource requiring replacement every 6000 hours. In addition, as the cable is electricity-free, there is no fire risk and it can even be installed underwater.
Sideglow's applications are limitless - swimming pools, spas, internal and external signage, perimeters of buildings, nightclubs, emergency lighting and stairnosings, amongst many other applications, can benefit from this effective and attractive lighting solution.
