Millennium Bridge
UFO was contracted by Gateshead Council, who were looking for a discreet, safe, low maintenance lighting system that could be enclosed in a handrail and provide illumination to the path leading along the Gateshead Quays past the new Millennium Bridge and around the Baltic Square.
One lightsource feeds a 20 metre section of the handrail, providing both functional and decorative lighting with optional colourchange. The fibre optic heads sit flush with the surface of the handrail and are safe to touch while being difficult to vandalise.
The lightsources are located in columns, allowing easy access for the annual bulb change. Universal Fibre Optics can specify, manufacture and install fibre optics in most hollow handrails.
Equipment used:
Light sources: 150w metal halide with colourwheel. One lightsource per per 20m section.
Fibre harnesses: 4.5mm glass angled to ground at 1000mm centres, 3mm glass shining directly on ground below handrail
End fittings: UFO Handrail Ferrules
