Durham Light Infantry Museum

One of the North East's finest museums, the Durham Light Infantry Museum houses a precious collection of wartime medals and decorations in its purpose built medal room.

Prior to contracting UFO, the medals had been housed in display cases illuminated by standard flourescent lighting, which required the cases to be opened to regularly replace expired bulbs. In addition, the heat generated by the lights had begun to significantly discolour and damage the medal ribbons and descriptive panels within each exhibit.

Having chosen to install fibre optic lighting during the refurbishment of the Medal Room, the benefits can clearly be seen by visitors. As fibre optic light is a cold light source, the exhibits are protected from heat damage while being illuminated by very small, powerful and discreet lighting. The light source units are located out of view and maintenance can be carried out without the need to open the vacuum sealed display cases.

Equipment Used:

light sources

Aurora 100w Halogen.

cables

2mm end-lit glass fibre feeding light tubes (these are available in a number of diameters to suit individual applications).

fittings

Specially fabricated fittings on vertical display cases.
