Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin
Universal Fibre Optics has supplied a fibre optic lighting system for the function suite at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin Airport. The system was specified and supplied by Jazan Designs of Newtownabbey, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
The fibre optics form a starfield effect within irregularly shaped recessed rafts in the ceiling and are unusual in that the fibres have been fixed at varying lengths. Some are fixed close to the ceiling in the normal manner for a star ceiling and others have been fixed so that they hang some way below the ceiling.
All the fibres are 1mm diameter polymer sheathed in bundles of 9 fibres made especially for this project by Universal Fibre Optics. The lengths used in the harnesses range up to 31m. The light is provided by DMX controlled light sources which can give a colour changing and / or twinkling effect depending on how they are programmed. The light sources use 150W metal halide lamps which offer a long 5000-6000 hours between re-lamping. The entire system comprises 756 points of light which only require four light source units.
The function room can be divided into four areas for flexibility and each area has its own light source to allow the lighting effect to be controlled independently in each. When all the dividers are open the fibre optic lighting for the entire room can be synchronised.
