Alnwick Garden

Universal Fibre Optics have supplied and installed decorative lighting at the newly expanded Alnwick Garden in Northumberland, UK. Commissioned by the Duchess of Northumberland, the garden is a magical 12 acre public space designed to give an ever changing experience throughout the seasons. The enchanting space is complemented by the extremely versatile and safe effects that the fibre optic system gives.

The fibre optic lighting is centred in and around the Pavilion, designed by the architect Sir Michael Hopkins, which acts as a gateway to the garden. The lighting design was by DPA Lighting Consultants.

In front of the pavilion, the tiled paving has over 6000 points of 1mm end-lit polymer fibre in a protected sheath embedded in the grout between the tiles to give a star field effect at night.

The steps use a special side-emitting fibre to give a gentle wash of light down the step risers. The 150W metal halide light sources used in these areas have DMX 512 controlled colour changing.

In the washroom, thin 19mm UFO light wands shine light into the bubble-glass sinks to give a colour-changing glow in the glass. These are powered by a UFO Standard 150W metal halide light source with continuous colour-change via a Varicolour wheel.
